Initial teacher education
We will work with initial teacher education providers, qualification accreditation bodies and relevant professional bodies in considering the nature and scope of science / pūtaiao and technology / hangarau content in initial teacher education.
This could form a component of under-graduate qualifications for early childhood and primary education, and would be targeted to lift the confidence of graduating teachers / kaiako to teach science / pūtaiao, as primary teachers currently report limited confidence, particularly at years 7–8.
Early childhood and primary education is important for imparting foundation curiosity and learning behaviours for learners’ future attitudes and practices toward science and technology.
To maximise this opportunity new primary teachers and kaiako need the confidence and content knowledge to sustain student engagement and progress.
