Students at Tahuna Intermediate will trial a new co-screening approach to visual testing, with guidance from experts at the School of Occupational Therapy at Otago Polytechnic and the School of Medicine at the University of Otago will guide and assist students during the project. Given the high prevalence of visual impairment in schoolchildren, the detection and correction of refractive errors is a significant public health issue and is a priority of the World Health Organization (WHO). This project will research key questions, including: preferences of method for visual testing; assessing how co-screening for vision by school-aged children compares with gold standard optometry testing; perspectives of teachers/schoolchildren/parents about the key ethical and practical issues to consider with co-screening; and behavioural drivers of uptake with vision prescriptions.
